History

Heavyweight Music Ltd. is a company comprised of three divisions – artist management, publishing and music consultancy – and was initially formed in 1990 by Simon Goffe, a DJ, music journalist and promoter who had been Label Manager at independent label Desire Records. Having signed Double Trouble & Rebel MC to Desire and seeing them go straight to massive international success, he left to manage them and set up Heavyweight Management. During the 90’s the company had a number of successes with acts including US3, Shut Up & Dance, The Ragga Twins, Fresh Four, the Freestylers etc alongside Double Trouble and Rebel MC.

Heavyweight Management also specialised in running artists independent labels, including Rebel MC's Tribal Base label and More Rockers Records with Smith & Mighty. The Bristol connection started with Smith & Mighty and then broadened to include Roni Size and Krust, initially earning a name and reputation for themselves on the underground jungle scene.

Simon then took up the position of Senior A&R Manager at Universal Music Publishing in 1996, continuing managing just Roni Size and Reprazent. The first Reprazent album, 'New Forms', was released in 1997 to massive worldwide acclaim. September of 1997 saw Roni and Reprazent winning the Mercury Music Prize in the UK and a year later Simon returned to running Heavyweight full-time. In 2001 he was joined by Emily Moxon who had just spent a year as Label Manager at Hospital Records (seeing its rise from cottage industry to leading Drum and Bass imprint), after leaving the PR and consultancy company Main Source.

Over the last few years Heavyweight has expanded to take in a publishing company (Autonomous Music) who are actively signing promising songwriters, and Heavyweight Consultants, a music industry consultancy that offers specific services to both artists and small labels, as well as wider consultancy to general, music orientated businesses.
